Among his best-known work is The Fifth Form at St. Dominic's. He was a regular and prolific contributor to The Boy's Own Paper (B.O.P.), in which most of his fiction first appeared. Through his family's business, Talbot Baines Reed (3 April – 28 November ) was an English writer of boys' fiction who established a genre of school /5(10).

Dominic's (first published ) is the best known of the school stories by the late nineteenth century author Talbot Baines Reed. The stories as well as the book were written for the Boy's Own Paper and published by the Religious Tract Society, with illustrations by Gordon Browne.
It was adapted into the film of the same. His robust, moral, but entertaining school stories first appeared in the Boy's Own Paper. They include The Fifth Form at St.
Dominic's (), The Master of the Shell (), and Cockhouse at Fellsgarth (). A PDF of scans and an HTML version of this book are provided. I thoroughly enjoyed this, and I hadn't particularly expected to. I thought that, being a Victorian (it was published in ) boys' school story, it'd be full of preaching and violent bullying, but there was no preaching, and the bullying was no worse than it is in most later school stories.

The story focuses a bit less on the Fifth Form than might be expected from the title. There was actually a considerable portion of the story that focused on the younger brother of Oliver.
